Weeze Airport (NRN): Your Ultimate Low-Cost Gateway to the Lower Rhine and Beyond

Weeze Airport (NRN), also known as Niederrhein Airport, is a pivotal international airport in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Strategically located near the Dutch border and approximately 70 km (43 miles) north of Düsseldorf, NRN has firmly established itself as a primary hub for budget-conscious travelers across the Lower Rhine region and the neighbouring Netherlands.

Having transitioned from the former RAF Laarbruch airbase, Weeze is one of Germany’s youngest airports, catering efficiently to millions of passengers seeking affordable flights to holiday destinations across Europe and North Africa.

In 2024, the airport confirmed its role as a key regional player, serving approximately 1.95 million passengers, and boasting a current operational capacity of around 3.5 million passengers annually.

Airlines and Extensive Low-Cost Route Network

Weeze Airport is recognized primarily as a vital base for the leading low-cost carrier Ryanair. The airport offers an impressive route network of over 40 destinations, prioritizing direct, affordable travel across some of Europe’s most popular leisure and city-break spots.

The route network is notably strong in Southern Europe and North Africa, appealing strongly to travelers from both Germany and the Netherlands.

    Popular destinations currently include:

    • Spain: Palma de Mallorca, Málaga, Alicante, Girona, Seville, Ibiza.
    • Morocco: The airport is a major gateway to Morocco, with routes including Tangier, Nador, Fez, Agadir, and Marrakech.
    • Italy: Milan (Bergamo), Bari, Pescara, Cagliari (Sardinia).
    • Greece & Croatia: Thessaloniki, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Pula, Zadar.
    • Portugal: Faro, Porto.

Getting to and From Weeze Airport (NRN Transportation Guide)

Despite its location outside major city centers, Weeze Airport offers several reliable, multimodal transport links.

Public Transport (Bus & Train Connection)

Since the direct bus connection to Düsseldorf is no longer operational, the most common and cost-effective public transport route involves two steps:

    1. Airport Shuttle Bus: Take the local shuttle bus (e.g., NIAG Bus SB46 or SW1/73) directly from the terminal to either Weeze Bahnhof (Train Station) or Kevelaer Bahnhof (Train Station). The shuttle journey takes about 10–15 minutes. Fares for the local bus are very low (approx. €2–€7, depending on the destination).
    2. Regional Train (RE10): From Weeze or Kevelaer station, take the RE10 regional train (Niers-Express) directly to Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof (Main Station).
    • Total Journey Time to Düsseldorf Hbf: Approximately 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 30 minutes.
    • Total Cost to Düsseldorf Hbf: Can be as low as €7–€20, depending on the ticket type and promotions.

Other important shuttle routes connect the airport to nearby towns and cities in the Netherlands, such as Nijmegen.

    Taxi, Transfers, and Rental Cars

    • Taxi & Private Transfer: Taxis are readily available outside the terminal. A taxi or private transfer to Düsseldorf is significantly faster, taking about 50–60 minutes, but is substantially more expensive, typically costing between €150 and €200.
    • Car Rental: Major car rental agencies, including Sixt and Hertz, maintain on-site desks, offering flexibility for exploring the Lower Rhine, the Ruhr Area, or crossing into the Netherlands.
    • Parking: The airport provides extensive, well-managed paid parking facilities with approximately 7,000 spaces. It is highly recommended to reserve parking online in advance for the best rates.

    Terminal Facilities and Passenger Services

Weeze Airport operates a single, efficient terminal optimized for the swift processing of low-cost flights. While designed for efficiency, it provides all necessary services and amenities for a comfortable journey:

    • Dining and Shopping: The airport features duty-free shopping (Travel Value), as well as various food and beverage options, including the HeimatHafen cafe/restaurant and the Charly – Weeze Gate Bar, providing pre-flight refreshments.
    • Connectivity: Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the terminal building.
    • Business & Comfort: Passengers can find ATMs, currency exchange services, and dedicated facilities for mobility-impaired passengers. For a quieter wait, the terminal also features the Carlsberg Lounge & Terrace.
    • Other Services: Baby-care rooms, charging stations for electric cars in the parking area, and luggage lockers are also provided.

    Exploring the Region from NRN

Weeze Airport is perfectly positioned for visitors looking to explore more than just Düsseldorf.

    • The Netherlands: The historic Dutch city of Nijmegen is easily accessible and a popular destination for travelers arriving at NRN.
    • Lower Rhine: The surrounding Lower Rhine region is famous for its flat, scenic terrain, making the airport a popular starting point for cyclists interested in exploring the extensive German and Dutch bike path networks.
