Anglesey Airport (VLY/EGOV): North Wales’ Strategic Dual-Use Aviation Hub

Anglesey Airport (Welsh: Maes Awyr Môn), identified by IATA code VLY and ICAO code EGOV, is a distinctive and strategically important airport in North Wales. Uniquely, it operates as a dual-purpose facility, primarily serving as RAF Valley, a major Royal Air Force training base, while also historically accommodating civil passenger traffic.

Located in Llanfair-yn-Neubwll on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, the airport is a vital link to the region, situated close to the port town of Holyhead and the bustling A55 North Wales Expressway.

    Airport Status and Key Operations

Anglesey Airport’s principal function is military aviation. It is owned by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and is home to RAF Valley, a world-class training centre.

    • Primary Role (RAF Valley): The station is home to the No. 4 Flying Training School (FTS), where the next generation of UK fighter pilots is trained using advanced jets like the BAE Hawk T2, alongside the Beechcraft Texan T1. It also hosts the RAF Mountain Rescue Service, providing high-readiness search and rescue capabilities.
    • Civil Aviation Status: The airport site, on land leased by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) to the Isle of Anglesey County Council, previously hosted a commercially subsidised route to Cardiff. However, the last publicly subsidised scheduled passenger service was permanently withdrawn in June 2022, following a decision by the Welsh Government to cease funding the route.
    • Current Civil Access: While scheduled flights are no longer operational, the civil terminal remains in place. General Aviation (GA) traffic and private flights are permitted, but strictly require Prior Permission Required (PPR) due to the high intensity of military flying operations.

    Passenger Terminal and Facilities

The civil passenger terminal, completed in 2007, is a modern, single-storey structure designed to support regional air travel.

    • Design & Amenities: The building features essential facilities, including a check-in area, a departure lounge, and baggage handling services. While the limited commercial services meant amenities were basic (previously including a small café and Wi-Fi), the focus is now on supporting potential GA users, stakeholders, and the underlying military operations.
    • Accommodation: Due to its location, there are no hotels directly on-site. Visitors and military personnel typically use local options, including popular nearby establishments such as Tre-Ysgawen Hall and The Bull Hotel.

    Ground Transportation and Accessibility

The airport’s location is highly convenient for accessing key areas in North Wales and beyond.

    • Road Network: Anglesey Airport is situated less than two miles from the A55 North Wales Expressway, providing direct and fast road links eastwards to Chester, the UK motorway network, and south towards Cardiff.
    • Parking: A dedicated parking area is available, which was previously provided free of charge to passengers of the scheduled Cardiff service. This makes it a convenient spot for local access and drop-offs.
    • Public Transport: Arriva Bus services connect the airport vicinity to the nearby village of Valley and the major ferry port and transport hub of Holyhead.
    • Rail Link: The nearest railway station, Valley, provides services on the North Wales Coast Line, offering onward travel to Bangor, Chester, and London.

Historic Route Network and Regional Importance

For many years, the scheduled service from Anglesey to Cardiff (Cardiff Airport – CWL) was a vital Public Service Obligation (PSO) route, acting as a lifeline for Welsh Government employees and business travellers, drastically reducing the travel time between North and South Wales.

    • Past Carriers: The route was operated by various regional airlines over its history, including Links Air, Citywing, and Eastern Airways.
    • Legacy: Despite the cessation of commercial flights, the airport’s infrastructure and strategic position underscore its potential for future civil aviation needs, making it a pivotal regional asset.
