Rijeka Airport (RJK/LDRI): Your Essential Gateway to Croatia’s Idyllic Kvarner Bay

Rijeka Airport (RJK), officially known as Zračna luka Rijeka, serves as the primary international aviation hub for Croatia’s stunning Kvarner Bay region. Strategically situated on the scenic Krk Island near the town of Omišalj, RJK is the critical entry point for millions of tourists heading to popular coastal destinations like the island itself, the sophisticated town of Opatija, the Riviera of Crikvenica, and the historic city of Rijeka. While primarily operating as a crucial seasonal connector, the airport continues to expand its year-round connectivity.

    Location and Key Information

Rijeka Airport offers travelers immediate access to one of the most beautiful parts of the Adriatic coast. The airport’s location on Krk Island is linked to the mainland by the Krk Bridge, ensuring quick transfers.

    • IATA/ICAO Codes: RJK / LDRI
    • Location: Omišalj, Krk Island, Croatia (approximately 17 km from Rijeka city center)
    • Geographic Coordinates: 45° 13′ 01” N, 14° 34′ 13” E
    • Passenger Traffic (Updated): RJK continues to see strong recovery and growth. In the first eight months of 2025, the airport welcomed approximately 118,000 passengers, representing a positive year-on-year increase of 5.3%, underscoring its growing importance in Croatian tourism.

    Airlines and Direct Flights

The airport features a diverse mix of seasonal and year-round flight options, strongly favoring connections with key European source markets through major carriers, including numerous low-cost airlines.

    • Main Operators: Key airlines include Eurowings, Lufthansa, Condor, airBaltic, Croatia Airlines, Ryanair, Air Serbia, and TUI, ensuring broad connectivity.
    • Popular European Routes (Summer Season): RJK offers direct connections to major cities, especially in German-speaking countries and Scandinavia, making it easy to book flights to Rijeka.
      • Germany: Munich (MUC), Frankfurt (FRA), Stuttgart (STR), Düsseldorf (DUS), Hamburg (HAM), Cologne (CGN).
      • United Kingdom: London (STN, LGW).
      • Central Europe: Brussels Charleroi (CRL), Wrocław (WRO).
      • Serbia: Belgrade (BEG).
    • Expansion & Service Updates:
      • New Route for 2026: SWISS International Air Lines (or partner Helvetic Airways) is scheduled to introduce a new seasonal service between Zurich (ZRH) and Rijeka twice weekly (Mon/Fri) during the peak summer months of 2026 (late June to late August).
      • Route Change: Note that the seasonal Vienna (VIE)-Rijeka service, previously operated by Ryanair, is scheduled to be discontinued for the 2026 summer season.
    • Domestic Connectivity: Essential domestic links are maintained to destinations such as Split (SPU) and Osijek (OSI).

    Terminal Features and Essential Services

Rijeka Airport operates a single, compact terminal building that has undergone several upgrades since its opening in 1970. It is designed for efficient processing of seasonal passenger flow.

    • Facilities Overview: The terminal features seven gates (one domestic, six international), though boarding is typically done via walking to the aircraft as there are no jet bridges.
    • Connectivity: Free and unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, allowing passengers to stay connected.
    • Shopping & Dining:
      • The public area hosts a small café/bar offering simple snacks, sandwiches, and beverages.
      • After the security check in the international departures area, travelers can visit a small duty-free shop featuring a selection of local Croatian products and standard travel retail items.
    • Banking: An Erste Bank ATM is located in the arrivals hall. Note that a currency exchange office is no longer operational, as Croatia has adopted the Euro (€).
    • Special Assistance: The airport provides services for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), which should be requested in advance through your airline. Third-party providers also offer Meet & Greet and concierge services for a seamless experience.
    • Check-in: Passengers flying with eligible airlines can utilize the online check-in service directly on the official Rijeka Airport website, available since May 2025.
    • Storage: Please note that luggage storage facilities are not available at RJK.

    Ground Transportation Options

Given its location on Krk Island, efficient transportation is crucial. Passengers have several reliable options for reaching Rijeka and other destinations in the Kvarner region.

    • Airport Shuttle Bus: A scheduled shuttle service provides a direct link between the airport and the main bus terminal in Rijeka. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, with a ticket costing around 5 EUR. It is highly recommended to check the schedule or book the shuttle at least 24 hours in advance, as its operation is often adjusted to flight arrivals.
    • Taxi Service: Taxis are readily available outside the terminal. The ride to Rijeka city center typically takes about 20 minutes, with an estimated fare of 20–25 EUR.
    • Car Rental: Major international and local car rental agencies, including Avis, Europcar, and Sixt, operate desks in the arrivals hall, offering the best option for exploring the entire Kvarner Bay and Krk Island.
    • Parking: The airport offers a dedicated, well-priced car park for both short-term pick-ups and long-term vacation stays.
